Everyone,Since the latest announcement from the Government of AB on Saturday there has been numerous meetings between Bow View, Ringette Alberta, and Ringette Calgary on options for any ability to continue ringette for this season. Most of the associations in AB have already opted to cancel the remainder of the 2020/2021 season. It is with a heavy heart I regret to inform you the Bow View Board last night has decided as well to end the current season of ringette. The decision was not taken lightly. There are numerous issues and concerns with the current restrictions imposed on team sports announced on Saturday. The Board has concerns on how to effectively control the restrictions with limited players, minimum spacings between players, and added stress to our volunteer coaches. There are also financial concerns about being viable with a limited number of players on an ice time with the high cost of ice in Calgary. Additionally, the Board has concerns about the new quarantine rules for anyone deemed a close contact of a positive case. The potential to have to quarantine for 24 days is not something we feel is fair to ask our coaches to absorb. The current restrictions, while it is good to see this province starting to open up again, are actually more stringent now than what we were dealing with in September from a team sport perspective.
Because of these issues, the Board felt it was in our community‘s best interest to shut down the current season. With this we can start getting the process of refunds in place. As communicated earlier, this is not a simple process and will take approx 6 to 7 weeks. Refunds will be done by age or division and proportional to amount of ice each division used and their registration fees. Each division‘s refund, consequently may be slightly different. This is also a very time consuming task once we receive all the refunds from the various facilities we work with.
The Board would like to extend our appreciation for the extraordinary effort put in for this very different year, from the non-skate evaluation process, team selection and first few months of ringette that we were able to enjoy. This was a very taxing year on our volunteers, coaches, Covid coordinators, team managers, and administrators. Not to mention, the parents/guardians and most importantly, our players. It was great to see and hear the kids back on the ice in September, our returning players and the joy coming from our new players. It is the Board’s hope while it feels like a lifetime ago that players were on the ice, that they enjoyed themselves, they stay safe and healthy, and want to come back next year for what is hopefully a more ‘normal’ year.
Now that the season is shut down, the Board can start concentrating on getting organized for the next season and make it as successful as possible. The Board is also looking into ice options for a Spring Ringette Program for those who may be interested in continuing this great game. Details will follow in the coming weeks and the structure of it will greatly depend on the restrictions of that time. We will likely start around mid-April and go to the end of May. We will put the information out on our social media and website as details become available.
On behalf of our Board I would like to wish the best to our 3rd year U19’s who are moving out of our program. It’s not the year you had hoped for however we recognize and wish all the best in your future endeavors and I hope that ringette will play some part in your adult lives, whether its playing, officiating, or coaching. You are always welcome to come back and have a part in our program in another capacity, giving back is the greatest gift you can give.
I’d like to thank again all of our volunteers this year as it was a very stressful and trying year. We have a great Association, it would not exist without our volunteers, community spirit and the patience of families trying to navigate the ever changing guidelines.
Thanks everyone, we hope to see you at a rink for Spring Ringette or in September. Keep playing this great game. Dwayne EarlePresident Bow View RingetteOn behald of our Board
